Our halau practices the traditional style of hula and protocols. Haraguchi teaches both kahiko, the ancient style of hula, and auana, the modern style. Haraguchi also emphasizes learning the chant, or ‘oli, of each dance.
Students begin each class with Kūnihi Ka Mauna, an entrance chant to ask for permission to enter. Only with the approval of the teacher, signaled by the teacher’s response chant, are students allowed and class starts.
We stretch, review basics, and usually cover both kahiko and auana styles in every class.
We accommodate all levels of dance and experience. There are no beginner classes; instead, we invite everyone to learn from each other.
Payment can be made at the first class in either via Zelle, cash or check. Please email info@hulanewyork.com for price details.
